DECLARATION FOR ORIGINAL INVALID PENSION
State of Georgia, county of Glynn.
On this 7 day of October, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and
97, personally appeared before me, Horace Dart of the Court of Ordinary,
a court of record within and for the County and State aforesaid, Joseph
Burnett, aged 56 years, a resident of the city of Brunswick, who being duly
sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Joseph Scranton
who enrolled on the 26th day of November 1864 in shipyard of the U.S. Ship New
Hampshire commanded by R.L. Law, Lieutenant Commander, Commanding, and
was honorably discharged at Port Royal, South Carolina on the (left blank) day
of November 1865; this his personal description is as follows: Age, 56
years; height 5 feet 6 inches; complexion, negro; hair (left blank); eyes (left
blank). That while a member of the organization aforesaid, in the service
and in the line of his duty at (left blank), in the state of (left blank), on or
about the (left blank) day of (left blank) 18--, he was crippled in the hand
that on or about the day of (information missing) he contracted kidney trouble
and also on or about the day of (information missing) 18-- he contracted
rheumatism.
That he has not been employed in the military or naval service
otherwise than as stated above.
That he is now totally disabled from obtaining his subsistence
by manual labor by reason of his injuries, above described, received in the
service of the United States; and he therefore makes this declaration for the
purpose of being placed on the invalid pension roll of the United States.
He hereby appoints with full power of substitution and
revocation F.L. Satterwaite of Leechville, North Carolina his true and
lawful attorney to prosecute his claim. That he has not received (left
blank) applied for a pension. That his post office address is #2165
Cochran Ave. of Brunswick state of Georgia.
