Lower Altamaha Historical Society
Coastal Georgia Genealogical Society
In January of 1736,
the first group of immigrants arrived in the British Colony of Georgia to
settle along the Altamaha River, in a town christened New Inverness.
These early immigrants were the Scottish Highlanders, their town was later
to become known as Darien.
These immigrants were
not your ordinary band of folks, they were specifically selected to form
the basis of this new town because of their military acumen. The
town was founded on general principals based on the morals of the day,
slavery was prohibited, as the settlers strongly opposed this peculiar
institution. This was a short lived statute, by 1748 slavery was
introduced to the area.
On 19 December 1793,
the county of McIntosh was formally created from parts of Liberty, and was
named in honor of one of the early immigrant families, the Clan
Mackintosh.
My name is Amy
Hedrick, and I am the host for the GlynnGen.com website, and the
county pages found herein. These pages are part of a greater work of
records from the Glynn County Genealogy & History Website. Many
queries have been sent me regarding information located in other counties,
and I try my best to help. As time progresses, maybe you folks at
home, will want to share your McIntosh County heritage and records.
This is a work in
progress, as I haven't much to offer, but thanks to Ann Richardson
Davis, I have a great start!
