Bluff-Gibbs-Silco-Stafford Cemetery

Under a blanket of pine needles, briars and set back from the bank of the Satilla River, rests at least 68 souls in a Freedmen's Cemetery. The earliest inventoried birth is recorded from1847. This burial site has been identified as Stafford Cemetery, Silco Cemetery and Bullhead Bluff Cemetery which reflects the lives lived by those in these graves. Several are believed to have been enslaved by Robert Stafford on Cumberland Island. They would have occupied what is now known as The Chimneys, slave cabin ruins of Stafford Plantation. Once emancipated, many found work at the Silco timber mills in the vicinity and formed a Freedmen's Settlement off of Bullhead Bluff Road.
The above narrative was written by Andrea Witwer for use with permission on GlynnGen.com. Andrea and I visited this cemetery in December 2020 and it really has not changed much since Tara Fields photographed it 20 years ago. The cemetery is largely overgrown and the burial sites are covered in natural debris. We worked very hard just to uncover the few stones we could find. One of the neighbors to the cemetery is very interested in helping preserve and conserve the cemetery, however, they need help and would like family involvement.
