Official Behavior Cemetery Page

The cemeteries of McIntosh County have been transcribed and recorded by a group of folks known as the Lower Altamaha Historical Society.  The cemetery book committee was comprised of Mattie R. Gladstone, Suzanne D. Forsyth, Mariana D. Hagan, Myrtle Newberry, Tanis Cross, Lloyd Y. Flanders, Lillian Schaitberger, and Ellie Legg.

I have been doing research on many of the persons interred here and therefore have many updates and obituaries to add to the listing already created by the Lower Altamaha Historical Society.  I am by no means taking credit for their transcription, it was COMPLETELY DONE BY THE LAHS, I have only made corrections to dates and names and have added obituaries and other possible burials from death certificate research.  If you have questions, you may direct them to me; however, I will most likely have to refer you to the LAHS as I do not know what their sources are for those interred here.

This cemetery is located on Sapelo Island in a community named Behavior; reportedly named Behavior because it was a place on the island that unruly slaves were sent until they could behave.  Another story states that it got it's name from a saying by an overseer.  A new group of people (reportedly if the Ibo tribe) were brought to the island.  They were scared out of their wits at what had just happened so they ran out to the woods and hid.  The overseer said to put food out for them and watch them until they could behave and then bring them home.

The cemetery's beginning is not known, but burials have been recorded as early as the 1870s.  Sapelo Island was once owned by Thomas Spalding, and it is his "people" and their descendants that are buried here; the cemetery is still in use today.  Just recently (June 2010) excavations revealed slave cabin ruins right against the cemetery borders and currently research is being done to locate all burials marked and unmarked.  I visited this cemetery for the first time on 9 June 2010 and when I got to the back of the cemetery I could see (and feel on the ground as I was walking), numerous unmarked burial sites.  It will be very interesting what the ultimate findings are.

Many deaths were recorded on Sapelo Island in death certificates found online at the State of Georgia Virtual Vault with no cemetery named.  There are more cemeteries on the island so it is not known if the persons buried on Sapelo were actually buried in this cemetery.  However, many of those found in the death certificates shared family names that are found in this cemetery, therefore in the notes column you will find "is he/she buried here?" meaning it is not known for sure that this person was interred here.

I have created a family file using this cemetery transcript and online documents.  At the moment not all persons from the cemetery are entered as I wanted to only place those in the file that were related.  Now that I am finding more records on the families that were not related by blood, I have decided to put them in the GEDCOM file too so that people will know where the families went and hopefully to attract descendants who may not know about this exciting connection to history they have.  Since I have had to use census and other online records there are, of course, many mistakes that only descendants may be able to correct.
