Listings & Statistics
by Annette Holmes
429 Persons Auctioned March 1859 The following is a list of 479 persons that were not sold in the Butler auction of March 1859. This listing and notes were compiled by Ms. Holmes to coincide with those listed in the auction inventory from 2-3 March 1859. All persons listed on these two lists were enslaved by Major Pierce Butler of Pennsylvania; an absentee plantation owner from England who had settled in South Carolina during the Revolutionary War where he started his family and land holdings.
