So far, in all of the surrounding
counties, only Brunswick has existing city directories & telephone books that can be viewed at the
Public Library. Many repositories either did not keep them, or they were
lost. Some may be in private collections. If you have an early one
that you would like to get online, drop me a line, and I'll set a page up!
The city directory is a great source for the 1890
census year, as the census for Glynn County, Georgia is forever lost.
Unfortunately this is only for people living within the city boundaries.
There were hundreds of folks living outside of the city limits that are not
listed in the book.
Newcastle, Reynolds, Union, Ellis,
and Norwich Streets, today, run from the north end of town to the south end, but
before 1908, they were called A, B, C, D, and E Streets respectively, north of
Gloucester Street. So from Gloucester Street north to S street, they were
lettered, and from Gloucester Street south to Dartmouth Street they were
Newcastle, Reynolds, Union, Ellis, and Norwich Streets. If you wanted to see
where great grandpa lived on B Street, you would drive down Reynolds Street
north of Gloucester Street.
I have the actual images of
these city directories. They have been put together in a slide
show, PDF format to be viewed with Adobe Acrobat Reader. Email me if for
more information. I can do lookups within these books also, they are just
too large to transcribe right now.
An added bonus to the 1892 Brunswick
City Directory was the St. Simons Island Directory, a business directory, and
the Darien, McIntosh Co., Directory. All of the the Brunswick Directories are
full of Brunswick's history, on the churches, schools, clubs, banks, office
holders, and more.
Be sure to check out the
Telephone Books!
